A Volunteer’s Perspective on the Bridge Housing Campus Emergency Shelter
As the weather begins to warm up, and we reflect on the past several months, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible support that made our Emergency Shelter possible this winter.
Our volunteers, staff and partners showed up day after day with so much compassion and generosity for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. During the cold stretch, those combined efforts left a lasting impact not only on the guests we serve, but also on everyone walking alongside them.
One of our dedicated volunteers, Sister Diane (Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary), recently shared a reflection on her experience serving during Code Blue conditions. Her words offer a glimpse into those quieter moments of presence and patience that often define our work.
In her piece, Lines, Sister Diane, along with Lorraine Leishman, reflects on moments as simple as waiting in line for a shower or hot meal. She writes about her volunteer experience with our guests, recognizing that “time, presence, respect and patience” are among the most meaningful gifts we can offer.
