In-Kind Donations

Thank you so much for thinking of our Detroit neighbors experiencing homelessness! Without your generosity, our work would not be possible. Please read the following carefully before donating items to us.

Our most urgent needs include:

  • Coats
  • Sweaters/Sweatshirts
  • Pants
  • Mens’ and Womens’ underwear size medium to 3XL (must be new)
  • Hats
  • Gloves
  • Scarfs
  • Blankets/Sleeping bags
  • Razors
  • Travel size hygiene items
  • Any items from our Amazon Wishlist
  • Will this be practical for our guests?
  • Will this fit our guests? Most of our guests are men and most wear sizes L, XL and 2XL.
  • Is it worn out, stained, ripped or otherwise not in good shape?
  • Would you want to wear or use this item? If the answer is no, we wouldn’t want our guests to wear it either.
  • Used underwear or socks
  • Dress clothing (suits, sport coats, dress pants, button downs, high heels, etc.)
  • Children’s and small-sized clothing
  • Toys
  • Canned goods
  • Foods prepared in a non-commercial kitchen
  • Books, games, and recreational items
  • Household items, including kitchenware, linens, and small appliances
  • Furniture

If you have any questions about which items will be accepted/can be donated, please contact Tyrie at tyrie@pfc.org or call 313.964.2823 (ext 234).

  • Wash and fold any used clothing items.
  • Sort any hygiene items. We no longer give out pre-packed hygiene kits. We like to let our guests choose what they need!
  • We prefer when items are packed into a box. They are easier for us to store that way!
  • If you require a donation receipt for tax purposes, please include your name, email/address and an itemized list with your donation.
  • Our donation drop-off times are Tuesday through Saturday from 10am – 4pm at our Bridge Housing Campus: 2915 W Hancock St, Detroit, MI 48208.
  • It helps our small team to know when to expect donations—please call 313-964-2823 or email info@pfc.org to let us know when to expect you.
  • If you are unable to drop off donations during these hours, contact us to arrange another time. We’ll do our best to accommodate your schedule!

Donor-Advised Funds

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a convenient and tax-efficient way to support the causes you care about. It works like a charitable investment account – once you contribute assets to your DAF, you’re eligible for an immediate tax deduction, and those funds can be invested and grow tax-free. You can then recommend grants to qualified nonprofits like PFC over time.

Giving through a DAF allows you to be strategic with your philanthropy and support our work when the time is right for you. To make a gift from your DAF, simply contact your fund manager and provide them with our legal name, Pope Francis Center, and tax ID number: 81-2516039.

With questions, please contact Carmen Szurpicki, Director of Philanthropy, at carmen@pfc.org or 313-964-2823 ext. 210.

IRA Charitable Gifts

(Qualified Charitable Distributions)

If you’re age 70½ or older, you can make a tax-free gift directly from your IRA to PFC. This type of gift, known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), counts toward your required minimum distribution and can reduce your taxable income – even if you don’t itemize deductions. 100% of your gift goes to support our mission – no income taxes reduce its value. Because QCDs are excluded from your income, they may help reduce your adjusted gross income which could lower Medicare premiums and impact the taxation of Social Security benefits.

It’s a smart and impactful way to support our mission while enjoying tax benefits. To make a QCD, simply contact your IRA administrator and request that a distribution be made directly to PFC. Be sure to include our legal name, Pope Francis Center, and tax ID number: 81-2516039.

With questions, please contact Carmen Szurpicki, Director of Philanthropy, at carmen@pfc.org or 313-964-2823 ext. 210.

Stock Gifts

Donating appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds is a smart and tax-savvy way to support PFC. When you give securities you’ve held for more than a year, you can avoid capital gains taxes and receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the asset.

It’s a powerful way to make a bigger impact at a lower after-tax cost. To initiate a stock gift, contact your broker and provide them with our transfer information.

Please contact Carmen Szurpicki, Director of Philanthropy, at carmen@pfc.org or 313-964-2823 ext. 210 to receive transfer information and begin the process of contributing stocks, bonds, or mutual funds.
