When Pope Francis Center (PFC) announced that Letty Azar had been elected to its board, it was the latest addition to a group of community and corporate leaders that have been a key part of the organization’s success.

Letty is vice president of Community and Government Affairs at Penske Corporation. She also has broad experience and leadership roles in community advocacy, neighborhood development and innovative approaches to improving the quality of life for Detroiters.

“Letty’s knowledge of not just the nonprofit world, but also the corporate world, added to her long-term commitment to serving the City of Detroit, makes her a valuable member of the board,” said Jim Vella, PFC board chair. “She has a keen mind for strategic thinking and an ability to support the mission, using her unique skills as a leader.”

Jim added: “Like I’ve said before. Everybody knows Letty and Letty knows everybody.”

Letty joins 20 other leaders with a broad range of backgrounds, experiences and industry knowledge on the PFC board. Jim said PFC has worked hard over the past few years to assemble a group of talented people to help guide the organization.

“A strong board is the foundation upon which to build a strong organization,” he said. “It is critical to providing support to the CEO and the team in areas where they may not have a particular expertise within the organization. It also brings vast experience in leadership, project management, governance, and fund development that support the long-term sustainability of the organization.”
