Building Bridges Gala 2026: Celebrating Hope
What happens when a trio of automotive icons and more than 1,000 people unite for a night of hope? A record $2,045,586 in contributions come together for Pope Francis Center and its mission of ending chronic homelessness in Detroit.
The 2026 Building Bridges Gala celebrated the contributions and leadership of honoree Roger Penske and all he has done to lift up Detroit and its residents. Penske, known as “the Captain” for his disciplined and organized approach to creating winning racing organizations with different car brands, has championed investing in Detroit and creating opportunities for people to succeed, in addition to his business and motor sports success.
Penske was flanked on the stage by Ford CEO Jim Farley and GM President Mark Reuss for a fireside chat on what’s possible when a community comes together to support people experiencing homelessness.
Pope Francis Center President and CEO Fr. Tim McCabe talked about what it meant for Penske, a legend in motorsports racing, to be joined by leaders from archrivals Ford and GM through its Chevrolet brand.
“This is really important,” Fr. Tim told the audience. “It’s important for us as a country right now to see that you can be fierce competitors in business and at the racetrack, and be different in our political views, but we stand together, united, when we’re taking care of the least among us, those who need our help. Thank you for the example you are showing.”
A night at Ford Field wouldn’t be complete without kicking — or trying to kick — field goals. This year, guests were treated to a special visit from Detroit Lions Placekicker Jake Bates. Jake posed for photos and did some kicking of his own, while Fr. Tim had the all-important job of tee-ing up the ball. Side note: Jake is a pro and Fr. Tim’s fingers are just fine.
The Building Bridges Gala is PFC’s annual fundraising event to further our mission of ending chronic homelessness in Detroit.
PFC extends its thanks to presenting sponsor Lear Corp, the rest of the 2026 Building Bridges Gala sponsors and all who attended and supported our work creating healing and hope for our brothers and sisters in need.
“Knowing what we’ve been able to accomplish together gives me a lot of hope — hope not just for our mission, but for our world,” said Fr. Tim.
