Pope Francis Center Sees Sharp Increase in Demand for Homeless Support Services

DETROIT, Mich., May 20, 2026Record Day Center Attendance Reflects Growing Housing and Financial Instability Across Metro Detroit

The Pope Francis Center (PFC) is experiencing a significant surge in demand for services as rising housing costs, inflation, and ongoing financial pressures push more individuals and families into crisis. Last week, the organization’s Day Center reached a record-breaking attendance of 439 guests in a single day far exceeding the typical daily average of 250 guests.

The increase reflects a growing reality across the region: more people are struggling to afford basic necessities while living paycheck to paycheck. For many, even a small financial setback can quickly lead to housing instability, food insecurity, or homelessness.

“Behind every number is a person facing impossible choices between rent, food, transportation, and healthcare,” said Fr. Tim McCabe, SJ, President & CEO of the Pope Francis Center. “We are seeing more people come through our doors because the cost of living continues to rise faster than wages and available support systems can keep up. The need in our community is growing rapidly and we’re seeing that reflected in our growing guest count.”

PFC’s Day Center provides essential services including meals, showers, laundry, personal hygiene supplies, and access to medical care. Staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly to continue meeting the growing demand while maintaining safe and dignified care for guests.

As attendance continues to climb, the organization is evaluating operational adjustments to ensure services remain sustainable and effective for those who rely on them most.

“This is not just a homelessness issue — it is an affordability issue,” said McCabe. “More people are finding themselves one missed paycheck, one medical bill, or one rent increase away from crisis. We must continue working together as a community to support our most vulnerable neighbors.”

The Pope Francis Center is encouraging community members to support its mission through financial contributions, volunteerism, and advocacy for affordable housing and supportive services.
