About the Pope Francis Center: Pope Francis Center exists to provide meals, supportive services, and housing assistance to Detroit community members in need, especially those experiencing homelessness. On an average day, we welcome over 200 guests and provide them with nutritious meals, showers, laundry, and access to doctors, dentists, lawyers, and housing providers through our free clinics. We have been serving Detroit’s most vulnerable citizens for over 30 years, and we envision a Detroit without homelessness, where every person has the resources for sustained stability.

 

Position Overview:

Working closely with the Pope Francis Center CEO and leadership team, the Human Resource Director supports achievement of organizational goals and objectives by developing, coordinating, and leading mission-aligned policies, activities, and staff of the Human Resource (HR) department. Serving as the champion of change for all personnel-related initiatives, this position works to improve recruiting efficiencies and outcomes, foster a culture of positive accountability, strengthen employee engagement, and increase employee retention. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Leading Change and Culture
    • Coordinate new-hire orientation and logistics, including scheduling, materials, and checklists for all required tasks. 
    • Foster a collaborative team environment, encouraging open communication and teamwork.
    • Develop and implement strategies to increase employee engagement and satisfaction.
  • Recruitment of Organizational Staff
    • Leads the recruitment team to source qualified active and passive candidates.
    • Present qualified candidates to the hiring manager and key stakeholders.
    • Screen candidates to ensure minimum qualifications are met and make recommendations of qualified candidates.
    • Coordinate with administrative staff members to schedule interviews and reviews of candidates.
  • Employee Retention
    • Oversee compensation policies, assembling data, driving market competitiveness, and internal equity.
    • Examine and analyze turnover and retention data, exit interviews, and resignations to identify trends, patterns, gaps, and reconcile as needed.
  • Performance Management
    • Development and implementation of policies and procedures related to performance management, ensuring alignment with best practices and regulatory requirements.
    • Supports leadership and staff in applying disciplinary policies with fairness, empathy, and clarity while coaching managers through challenges to foster a culture of accountability and care.
  • Implement Employee Processes
    • Maintain, develop, and implement employee processes and procedures, using HR systems for proper documentation such as paid time off, holidays, company vehicle use, performance management, etc.
    • Provide support and guidance to employees regarding organizational policies and procedures. 
  • Documentation, Evaluation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of staff files. 
    • Ensure legal compliance with HR policies and procedures
    • Conduct background and reference checks.
  • Payroll and Benefits
    • Implement and maintain payroll, timekeeping, and benefits administration.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or related field.
  • 5-10 years of experience in the human resources field with experience in the nonprofit sector preferred.
  • Must demonstrate fluency in working with vulnerable populations, in a trauma-informed environment. 
  • Flexibility and creative problem-solving are essential in this growing organization where policies are still evolving.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong knowledge of HR best practices, employment laws, and regulations.

Supervision

Reports to the Director of Operations while working closely with leadership across departments to ensure cultural coherence and staff alignment. Directly supervises support staff. 

This job primarily operates in-person in a dynamic social services setting.
