About the Pope Francis Center:

Pope Francis Center exists to provide meals, supportive services, and housing assistance to Detroit community members in need, especially those experiencing homelessness. On an average day, we welcome over 200 guests and provide them with nutritious meals, showers, laundry, and access to doctors, dentists, lawyers, and housing providers through our free clinics. Our Bridge Housing Campus Recently opened Core City and is the centerpiece of our plan to end chronic homelessness in Detroit. We have been serving Detroit’s most vulnerable citizens for over 30 years, and we envision a Detroit without homelessness, where every person has the resources for sustained stability.

Position Name & Description

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for day to day operation of the volunteer program at the Pope Francis Center’s Day Center. The Coordinator will provide on-site supervision of volunteers, monitor scheduling, provide support to volunteers, promote engagement, and steward volunteer and partner relationships. As a member of the Community Engagement Team, the Volunteer Coordinator will be an integral part of planning and implementation of a strategic plan to continue to grow and develop volunteer engagement at the Pope Francis Center. This position reports to the Associate Director of Community Engagement.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Monitor volunteer scheduling, registration, and completion of necessary volunteer qualifications to ensure shift coverage
  • Greet, check-in, support, and provide on-site supervision of volunteers
  • Track volunteer attendance and maintain accurate volunteer records
  • Work with program team to identify and meet evolving volunteer needs
  • Develop and maintain guidelines and instructions for the successful completion of
    volunteer tasks at the Day Center
  • Communicate and engage with volunteers consistently to steward relationships
  • Address and elevate volunteer feedback and concerns
  • Provide support to volunteer department during agency-sponsored events (such as the
    Annual Building Bridges Gala) and large-scale volunteer days 1
  • Serve as on-site contact for partners, including clinical, legal, and other programming
  • Support program team and daily operations, providing coverage as needed
  • Participate in team meetings

Additional Program Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assist with setup in the morning of coffee, food, laundry, and shower stations
  • Assist volunteers with laundry, front office, showers, or food service line as necessary for
    service
  • Cleanup after daily service and preparation of areas for the following day of service
  • Help staff to maintain calm, pleasant atmosphere in the Center
  • Other duties as assigned

 Qualifications

  • Volunteer management experience or professional experience in a nonprofit setting
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of people
  • Flexibility to adjust hours to accommodate for special events
  • Ability to effectively manage a wide array of tasks and responsibilities
  • Must have a desire and willingness to work people experiencing homelessness
  • Must possess a valid drivers license
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)

Schedule

Standard work hours for this role: Tuesday – Saturday, 6:30am-2:30pm

Physical Requirements

This job primarily operates in-person in a dynamic social services setting. This role requires the ability to lift 50 pounds independently; walk, climb, or descend stairs; kneel, bend, and twist. The Volunteer Coordinator will occasionally operate a commercial vehicle to pick up and deliver items.
